What to Do in Tirana in Winter 2019

The city is becoming increasingly popular for winter breaks, especially around Christmas and the New Year. Winters are cool and wet with some snowfall that rarely settles. Throughout December, Skanderbeg Square becomes a winter village with a huge tree, pop-up food and drink stalls, and a Christmas market. There is also a smaller Christmas market on Toptani Street. A party and fireworks light up Skanderbeg Square on New Years Eve. If it is raining outside, take the opportunity to explore the city's museums. The National History Museum is the largest in Albania and is full of archaeological treasures and historic artifacts that take you on a journey from pre-history to the post-communist period. The National Gallery of Arts showcases the brief history of art in Albania as well as an ever-changing program of contemporary work.

Traffic Information

Drive from the airport into the city on the SH60/SH2 route, a journey that takes approximately 45 minutes. Driving in Tirana can be an adventurous part of your visit so to make navigating the busy city streets easier add a GPS to your booking. Drive with caution as the quality of road surfaces can vary, especially away from the city center. Vehicles must have headlights on at all times, a rule that is strictly enforced by the police. Parking can be chaotic and is often at the roadside with a fee being paid to an attendant.

Sixt Tips

Settlement in the Tirana area dates to the Paleolithic period. It later came under Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman rule but was only fully established as a city in 1614 by Sulejman Pasha Bargjini. Its 20th-century history was turbulent with more than 60 years spent under the isolationist rule of Enver Hoxha, a period when private car ownership was banned. After his death in 1985, the country has slowly moved towards a free market model and today remains an intriguing mix of old and new. Drive around the city to get a feel for its atmosphere, starting at Sheshi Skėnderbej or Skanderbeg Square. This square is a popular meeting point and in the evening the focus of nightlife when it comes alive with buskers and street stalls. Blloku is a trendy district that buzzes with bars while the grand boulevards of Tirana are lined with imposing historic buildings and museums.

Sightseeing Destinations

There are several things to put on your list of things to see in Tirana. Bunk'Art is where a huge Cold War bunker in the suburbs has become a museum full of historical artifacts and contemporary art. It should be a highlight of any visit. Once a closely guarded secret, the bunker was built for the elite of the city at the height of the Cold War threat. In historical contrast is Tanners Bridge. This worn-smooth bridge is one of the few surviving remnants of the city's Ottoman period. A short drive from the city center is the 15th-century Petrela Castle. Here you can dine on traditional Albanian food while admiring panoramic countryside views. Mt. Dajti National Park is an easily accessible mountain about an hour drive from the city and a popular destination for locals wishing to escape the city. Walk its trails or take the Dajti Express cable car to the summit. Another day trip idea is Kruja, a medieval town where Albanian hero Kastrioti Skanderbeg fought the Ottomans in the 15th century. The Skanderbeg Museum delivers a fascinating insight into the country's history while Kruja's open-air market is a great place for souvenir shopping.
